L’ICGEB est une organisation intergouvernementale unique, créée à l’origine comme un projet spécial de l’ONUDI. Entièrement autonome depuis 1994, il gère 46 laboratoires à la pointe de la technologie, situés à Trieste, en Italie, à New Delhi, en Inde et au Cap, en Afrique du Sud, et forme un réseau interactif avec plus de 65 États membres. Il joue un rôle clé dans la biotechnologie mondiale pour assurer l'excellence de la recherche, de la formation et du transfert de technologie vers l'industrie afin de contribuer concrètement à la réalisation du développement mondial durable et opère au sein du système des Nations Unies.
