2000 May 01Fishing in the adjacent National Parks bordering Lake Tanganyika
The PBLT Special Biodiversity Study highlighted the importance of aquatic areas in national parks for regional conservation. Therefore, in order to preserve biodiversity, fishing activity in these areas that cause conflicts must be linked to conservation and sustainable development goals in a sound framework. While the conservation of these areas is a priority, it is theoretically possible to allow some fishing activities that do not overexploit the resource. The problems of setting up models where some devices are allowed and others excluded should not be underestimated and regional parks must be encouraged to opt for total exclusion in order to simplify development.
