The efforts of the Government of Burundi in the reform and development of the water and sanitation sector carried out during the International Decade for Drinking Water and Sanitation were blocked by the socio-political crisis of 1993. Since 2007, the Government of Burundi has resumed the reform of the water and sanitation sector in order to respond to major development challenges in the sector, in particular the effective management of water resources and the sustainability of drinking water supply and sanitation services. Thus, a new National Water Policy, PN Eau, was developed and adopted to provide political guidelines for all activities in the water sector.
