Burundi has put in place indicators to monitor the implementation of its new National Strategy and Action Plan on Biodiversity (SNPAB 2013-2020) and the state of biodiversity. Analyzing the indicators relating to national objectives 5, 7, 13 and 15 relating to the trend of biodiversity and ecosystems providing ecosystem services, it is noted that not all of them are based on known quantitative data. It is therefore becoming obvious that the indicators formulated do not make it possible to analyze the biodiversity trend from several points of view. Moreover, these indicators do not start from a very specific starting situation. From this perspective, it is more than necessary for Burundi to be able to start establishing basic situations with reliable and well-recorded data and to improve the indicators formulated. Thus, the present project has the overall objective of “Establishing indicators to measure, monitor and report the state of biodiversity”. In this project, indicators will be formulated to help assess:
- Trends in the extent of selected ecosystems and natural habitats;
- Trends in populations of species associated with natural forest habitat in relation to agriculture;
- Trends in populations and risk of extinction of species that provide ecosystem services.
The relevant questions that will serve as a basis for the formulation of the indicators are the following:
- What are the trends in the extent of ecosystems: mountain forests, miombo woodlands, xerophilic groves, Hyphaene petersiana forest, savannas and marshes? ;
- What are the trends in species characteristic of natural ecosystems and natural habitats compared to industrial plantations of sugar cane, oil palm and rice cultivation? ;
- What are the trends in populations and the risk of extinction of species that provide ecosystem services?.
