This five-year Action Plan is a document that aims to operationalize the National Strategy and Action Plan for Environmental Education and Awareness for the next five years (2010-2015). It includes actions that can make an important contribution to a healthy environment in Burundi. This action plan is based on the following national vision: “All sectors of the population educated, trained, sensitized and committed to taking concrete actions for better protection of the environment for the well-being of present and future generations”.

For an effective implementation of the strategy and its action plan in environmental education, 3 strategic axes are selected:
- Strengthening the capacities of structures involved in environmental education;
- Establishment of communication mechanisms in the field of environmental education at all levels;
- Strengthening the capacities of all stakeholders to raise awareness and commit to concrete actions to protect the environment.

The effective operationalization of this action plan first requires the establishment of a coordination structure and a law in relation to environmental education. Financing mechanisms for defined interventions are essential.
