2016 Feb 01Safeguarding protected areas for the survival of humanity: Call for the effective involvement of decision-makers
In Burundi, the political will to conserve protected areas has taken shape since colonial times, then in 1980 with the Decree-Law establishing protected areas in Burundi. Recently, the Government wanted to improve the management of these defensive areas by implementing law no. 1/10 of 30 May 2011 on the creation and management of protected areas in Burundi, which accords a large part to the joint management of these ecosystems between the State and the local populations. Because of the impact of protected areas on the social and economic life of populations and the contribution of these areas to the national economy, the management of these areas must now be more concerted and coordinated between the various stakeholders directly or indirectly involved. Despite the known benefits of these protected areas, they continue to suffer threats of all kinds that can only be remedied with the involvement of decision-makers.
