Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)

The Global Biodiversity Information Fund (GBIF) is an international network and research infrastructure funded by governments around the world that aims to provide everyone, everywhere in the world, with open access to data on all types of life on Earth.

Coordinated by its secretariat in Copenhagen, the GBIF network of participating countries and organizations, working through participating nodes, provides data holding institutions around the world with common standards and open source tools to enable them to share information about where and when recorded species are located. This knowledge comes from numerous sources, ranging from museum specimens collected in the 18th and 19th centuries to geotagged smartphone photos shared by amateur naturalists in recent days and weeks.
