Techniques for growing, protecting and maintaining maize

Maize is one of the most cultivated cereals in Burundi, especially in high-altitude regions (over 1800m) where it is one of the staple foods. Despite its importance, it faces several constraints, including the lack of information on production, protection and conservation techniques. Another major problem in maize cultivation is related to its outcrossing, which accelerates the degeneration of varieties. In fact, the fact that farmers keep part of the harvest season after season as seed has the consequence of a gradual reduction in yield. Currently, even if the techniques of this cultivation are mastered by some, they are still faced with the issue of seeds. This manual first outlines the techniques for selecting new pure varieties and population varieties and for seed multiplication. The purpose of this part of the manual is to train and inform users about the importance of renewing seeds with authorized services. He then explains the techniques for producing, protecting and maintaining seeds and grains. With this manual, ISABU wanted to contribute to the development of maize cultivation by providing extension services with a basic tool for training and coaching farmers. We are confident that this book will contribute to the increase in maize production in the country. We salute the efforts of the authors of this manual as well as anyone who contributed directly or indirectly to its creation.
