Systematic and ecological study of amphibians in Burundi

The systematic and ecological study of amphibians concerns all regions of Burundi. Amphibians are important in the ecological balance of their habitat where the components are both prey and predatory. It reveals a polluted environment. The fundamental objective pursued in this work is to know the different species of amphibians and their living environment in order to better conserve them.

The harvest was carried out using a net of small meshes set in a trap for amphibians found in the water or in surrounding vegetation. For terrestrial samples, we captured them by hand. Captured amphibians are first photographed with a camera after being stunned. They are then put into jars containing 10% formalin. These jars are labeled with the date, place of capture, the name of the genus or species as soon as possible and the name of the collector. The captured samples are stored in the laboratory of the Burundian Office for Environmental Protection (OBPE).
