2020 Jan 14Study of exotic herbaceous plants in the city of Bujumbura
This final thesis at the OBPE biodiversity research department was carried out by Ms. NDAYISABA Seconde, a student at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, Department of Natural Sciences under the supervision of Msc NZIGIDAHERA Benoît Benoît, head of research in biodiversity at OBPE. This activity is part of this institution's research program on invasive plants that have been introduced for ornamentation and medication in Burundi. The objectives of this work are, among other things, to make a systematic inventory of exotic herbaceous plants in the city of Bujumbura, analyze their degree of abundance and the mechanism of their dissemination and their origin.
The harvests were made following 3 routes in semi-natural spaces. These three routes are: CARAMA to KANYOSHA passing through the city center, d e CARAMA to MUSAGA via Boulevard du 28 Novembre and d e CHANIC to KININDO via the Port and the KABONDO district. In all the spaces chosen on the three routes, the student delimited the plant collection areas, took photos of each species of plant harvested and noted its recovery rate, its characteristics and its phenology. The harvested plants were kept in newspaper papers and were transported to presses to dry them in the OBPE oven. Note that each species was kept in its own newsprint.
In the same vein, the student visited the flower sales areas to conduct a systematic survey as well as the sales level of each species.
