SOSUMO was created on 13/07/1982 in the form of a Private Law Mixed Economy Company (S.A.R.L). It is a company that grows sugar cane and produces and markets sugar. The Moso sugar project was included in the 3rd five-year economic and social development plan of Burundi in the early 1970s.

Its objective was to:

• To cope with the growing demand for sugar in the country;
• Promote the economic development of the Southeast;
• Mobilize the local workforce in the region;
• Save currency by avoiding the import of sugar.
