The Palm Oil Office is in charge of the palm oil sector. Oil palm cultivation is mainly practiced in the Rumonge municipality and somewhat in the Burambi and Buyengero municipalities in the province of Bururi. Two varieties of oil palm are grown: Dura and Tenera.
The OHP also grants plot credits for around 500,000 FBu/ha and the total area cultivated annually is on average 5,321 ha. This area grew constantly from 2000 to 2001 and remained constant in 2001 and 2002 and increased in 2003. The average palm diet production is on average 84321 T/year. Average palm oil production grew at a steady pace during the period 2000-2005. The average annual palm yield grew at the same rate of growth as the production of palm diets during the period 2000-2005. The average yield is 129923 kg/ha of crop per year. Palm diet productions are an important source of income because if we consider the average production (84321 T/year) the average price or kg is 75 Fbu /kg of diet; on average 6324,075,000 Fbu are distributed to producers per year.
