2020 Jan 24Study of the biodiversity of amphibians preserved in the OBPE laboratory: the case of Hyperoliidae and Bufonidae
From February 13 to March 13, 2018, the student NTAKIRUTIMANA Serges from the University of Burundi, Faculty of Sciences, Department of Biology in 3rd year Baccalaureate completed a training internship at the Biodiversity Research Service of the Burundian Office for Environmental Protection (OBPE) under the supervision of Professor NTAKIMAZI Gaspard from the University of Burundi and Mr. MASABO Onesphore from the OBPE.
The general objective of this internship was to improve knowledge on the biodiversity of amphibians preserved in the OBPE laboratory.
The specific objectives of this internship were:
- Know the different techniques for harvesting, identifying and maintaining amphibians;
- Learn how to set up zoological collections for scientific research purposes;
- Immerse yourself in the management of zoological collections;
- Inventory the amphibian samples preserved in the OBPE laboratory.
| The student first sorted the Hyperoliidae and Bufonidae specimens among the amphibian specimens preserved in the OBPE laboratory. Then, he proceeded to count the samples: the jars containing one or more individuals preserved in a jar containing formalin diluted to 10% (for better preservation). Afterwards, he grouped these specimens into genera and species. Each time the student recorded the specimens in a register while indicating the name of the species, the number of individuals, the family, the place of collection, the date of collection, the date of collection, the name of the collector, the determinator. Photos have been taken for all grouped genres. During this work, the handling of the samples was ensured by a clamp designed for this purpose. |
