The fauna of Burundi remains rich and varied because of the diversity of biotopes. It is composed of relatively well known vertebrates and very poorly studied invertebrates. Vertebrates include mammals, birds, reptiles, reptiles, amphibians, and fish with around 1202 species. Reptiles are a poorly studied group. Currently, only 80 species are known including 49 species for snakes. The Chameleonidae with 7 species come in second position and are mainly located in the Kibira National Park. Turtles also remain important, 9 species including 7 of the Pelusios genus. Faunistic studies show 24 endangered species including 8 endangered species and 16 vulnerable species, divided into 12 genera and 7 families. This document gives a certainly non-exhaustive list of reptilian species in Burundi (Table 1). This list is based on inventory work carried out as part of various studies carried out at INECN and the University of Burundi.
