Xerophile groves of the Rusizi plain

Rusizi Plain Grove

In the plain of Rusizi the groves of Cadaba farinosa ssp. Adenotricha and Commiphora madagascariensis occur in the form of open vegetation where the groves are more or less widely dispersed in a low and overgrazed lawn.

Xerophilous boqueteaux include plants with obvious sclerophyllous characteristics; their floristic composition is relatively constant, at least at the level of the most representative taxa. In the dominant stratum, we often find Hyphaene petersiana or Euphorbia candelabrum, sometimes both. Occasionally, Acacia sieberana var. vermoesenii and Balanites aegyptiaca also come into play.

In all cases, this tree-like stratum never exceeds 10 m in height. The middle, shrubby and suffrutescent stratum houses most of the characteristics of the grove and its height varies between 3 and 5 m. Other species such as Grewia similis, Azima tetracantha, etc. are also detected there, etc. At ground level, we note the presence of a discontinuous herbaceous stratum with an always weak overlap. Among the herbaceous species, Sanseviera dawei is noted. Lianas invade the various levels and make stratification less and less noticeable.
