Ecosystem
Savannas of Eastern Burundi
These formations are encountered in the Kumoso Depression and in the northern part of Buyogoma. Overall, these savannas contain a core of common woody species: Parinari curatellifolia, Pericopsis angolensis, Hymenocardia acida, Anisophyllea boehmii abundant in wooded and treed savannas, Annona senegalensis, Annona senegalensis, Albizia antunesiania, Albizia adianthifoli has often scattered. The herbaceous stratum is dominated by Hyparrhenia, Loudetia, and Panicum. These are anthropogenic plant formations that largely replace cleared open forests.
| Grassy savannas constitute the plant formation that occupies most of the areas occupied by these formations. In this type of formation, small shrubs, Annona senegalensis, Maytenus senegalensis, Maytenus senegalensis, Entada abyssinica, Piliostigma thonninghii, etc. are very scattered in a grass mass whose species may be Hyparrhenia cymbaria, Maytenus senegalensis, Maytenus senegalensis, Entada abyssinica, etc. It is common to see differences in Kumoso savannas., a bamboo grove face dominated by the species Oxythenanthera abyssinica. |
On more degraded soils, a Loudetia simplex savannah develops with species such as Eugenia laurentii, Striga asiatica, Fadogia cienkowskii, Trachypogon Spicatus, Euphorbia zambesiana, etc.
The passage of bush fires in this type of savannah allows the development of geophytes such as S cutellaria paucifolia, Kniphofia zambesiens, Habenaria zambesiana and Cyanotis caespitosa.
- Tree and shrub savannas are savannas that still contain fairly abundant shrubs and trees. We distinguish:
*Wooded savannas with Parinari curatellifolia, Pericopsis angolensis and Hymenocardia acida. These are by far the best represented savannas in Ruvubu Park. They are also found throughout Kumoso, in Makamba;
* Shrub savannas with Hymenocardia acida and Parinari curatellifolia. They are found everywhere in the East in more degraded environments and are poor in woody species: Hymenocardia acida, protea madiensis, Parinari curatellifolia, Securidacalongipenduculata, etc.
