Income-generating activities for residents of Ruvubu National Park

As part of the implementation of the project “Improving the effectiveness of the management system of protected areas for the conservation of biodiversity in Burundi through the engagement of stakeholders”, income-generating activities have been initiated since last year for the benefit of communities bordering the Ruvubu National Park.

The objective of this activity is to properly protect the biodiversity of the park and its habitat by improving the well-being of communities bordering this park.

This year, 574 goats were distributed to several people grouped into associations for the conservation of the park's biodiversity. These are therefore the groupings of the 4 municipalities bordering the park, namely Kigamba and Cankuzo for the province of Cankuzo and Buhinyuza and Muyinga for the province of Muyinga.

In return, these groups will devote themselves to the protection of the park and its biodiversity through conservation actions such as the fight against poaching and bush fires, which are the main causes of the degradation of this ecosystem, which is, moreover, the largest national park in Burundi.
