2020 Feb 01Study of natural ecosystem trends: Case of the Rumonge Nature Reserve and the Kigwena and Vyanda Forest Nature Reserves
In order to implement its National Strategy and Action Plan on Biodiversity (SNPAB 2013-2020), Burundi has already begun studies to formulate indicators in order to analyze the trend of biodiversity in particular and ecosystems in general. These studies reported trends in the extent of certain ecosystems and natural habitats, populations of species linked to a natural forest habitat compared to agriculture, and trends in populations and the risk of extinction of species that provide ecosystem services (Nzigidahera & Habonimana, 2016). In this study, it is a question of formulating indicators to monitor the trend of ecosystems that were not covered in the previous study. These ecosystems are:
- Rumonge Nature Reserve;
- Kigwena Forest Nature Reserve;
- Vyanda Forest Nature Reserve.
The management of these reserves remains a problem as conservation decisions are not based on scientifically collected information. The objectives of this study are:
- Availability of data and information on the trend of the areas of these PAs;
- Availability of data and information on the trend of the various key conservation species;
- Formulate and disseminate indicators based on the data and information collected
- Set up a database to monitor the trend of these APs over time.
This document includes the main points in addition to the introduction:
- Methodology for collecting and analyzing data;
- Overview of the ecosystems studied;
- Analysis of trends in the components of the ecosystems studied;
