Sectoral Plan for the Integration of Biodiversity at the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Equipment

The present Sectoral Plan for the Integration of Biodiversity of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Equipment (MTTPE) was developed as part of the draft revision of the National Strategy and Action Plan on Biodiversity and Development of the 5th Country Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity under the financing of GEF/UNEP. It provides the services of this Ministry, and more specifically to project owners and project managers of transport infrastructure projects, buildings and equipment, with the elements of framework, understanding and activities to integrate the protection of biodiversity at each stage of the development and execution of their projects.

Indeed, the MTTPE is responsible for the preparation and implementation of the sector's policy. Roads, airports, ports and lakes currently play an essential role in national and international trade, not only for the imports and exports of basic products vital to Burundi's economy (oil, chemical products, minerals, chemical fertilizers, chemical fertilizers, chemical fertilizers, agro-food products, agro-food products, agro-food products, agricultural and livestock products, etc.) but also they can play a role in the protection or destruction of biodiversity. The MTTPE is therefore a key player in the process of biodiversity conservation. The Sectoral Biodiversity Integration Plan will thus describe the impacts of transport infrastructures and buildings on natural environments and species. It will then focus on key elements (regulatory and technical) to carry out projects that better take into account the protection of biodiversity, in particular in the design of infrastructures and engineering structures, geotechnics and pavement earthworks, the transport and mobility system, the road information system, the road information system, the operation of the road, the operation of the road, the operation of the road, the operation of the road, road safety and its equipment, the approval of transport agencies, the storage of goods, heavy handling (at the port). and at the airport), boating and leisure nautical boats, animal mortality, building and equipment standards.

This Sectoral Integration Plan developed by a resource person from the same ministry is the result of a sectoral consultation workshop that took place from February 28 to March 1, 2013, which brought together representatives of the MTTPE to give their contributions for the development of this document. This document is therefore built around the following main axes:

  • Status of integration of biodiversity into the MTTPE;
  • Impacts of MTTPE interventions on biodiversity;
  • Constraints for the preservation of biodiversity;
  • Strategic plan for the integration of biodiversity.
