Plastic bags still exist on the market

The Ministry of the Environment, Agriculture and Livestock paid a visit to some factories that manufactured plastic bags on Monday, July 6, 2020, to see if they really gave up making them or not.
The observation was that some companies no longer manufacture these bags while others still manufacture them.

To bet on the use of plastic bags, biodegradable, solid and cheaper packaging compared to conventional bags has been produced by some companies. However, the owners of these businesses say that the sale of these biodegradable packaging is on an ad hoc basis because there are still plastic bags on the market that compete with them. These owners ask the Ministry of the Environment to do everything possible to eradicate the use of conventional bags.

The Director General of Environment, Water and Sanitation Jérémie Nkinahatemba says that to eradicate the use of these non-biodegradable bags, a text accompanying the decree law prohibiting the use of these bags will come out so that restrictive measures affecting those who continue to manufacture, import and market these bags will be drawn up so that restrictive measures affecting those who continue to manufacture, import and market these bags will be developed.

The expiration of the grace period that the Government had granted for all plastic bags and packaging to disappear from circulation throughout the national territory was on February 08, 2020, but these bags still exist on the Burundian market.
