2019 Mar 01Strengthening the capacities of stakeholders for the sustainable management of Prunus africana.
The present project aims to fill the information gaps on Prunus africana, in order to produce scientific bases useful for the development of a non-harmful trade opinion (ACNP) for this species for the Scientific Authority (AS) CITES Flore of the Republic of Burundi. The expected results are: (i) Overview of the production potential of Prunus africana on the first well-established production site, (ii) The well-delimited Prunus africana Production Sites (SPP 1&2) and the abundance/density, and the sustainable harvest quota calculated and updated on a scientific basis, (iii) The simple management plan for each SPP developed, (iv) The presence, use and the socio- The economic impact of P. Africana in village environments is well known, (v) Production of 100,000 Prunus africana plants and their planting carried out, (vi) Administrative officials and local communities are sensitized to stop the illegal exploitation of wild Prunus africana trees. The project reflects a response to questions raised in 2007 by CITES on the management of Prunus africana in Burundi. The ACNP report will gradually be refined based on inventory data and the socioeconomic survey.
