2013 Oct 01Climate change in the Great Lakes region
The countries of the Great Lakes, together with Kenya and Tanzania, have always been visible actors in the various stages of climate negotiations since the Bali Summit in 2007, such as the request, made by Presidents Kibaki and Museveni in Copenhagen in 2009, for compensation for the damage suffered by the poorest countries, as well as the Kenyan motion during the Doha negotiations in 2012 for the effective creation of the Green Climate Fund, or the appeal launched by Uganda against deforestation at the Durban Conference in 2011... Since the environment is still widely perceived as a low-intensity cooperation issue, it is true that it encourages strong positions to be taken, and has little or no negative effects in terms of image, bilateral relationships, or even internal policies.
