1999 Sep 01Forest resources and forest products in Burundi
The forest sector remains an important part of the national economy. Indeed, wood and its derivatives provide 95.4% of the country's total energy needs, or 1,578,078 tons of oil equivalent (toe). Petroleum and electricity products only provide 4.2%. Thanks to wood fuel, the country manages to save foreign currency for imports. The forest sector contributes up to 2% of GDP and 6% to job creation. In 1995, wood imports represented less than 0.1% of total import values, or nearly 90 million FBU.
