Gitega: The Head of State carries out monitoring and evaluation visits to the preparations for season C

On Friday, July 23, 2021, the President of the Republic Evariste Ndayishimiye paid a series of visits to Gitega and Bugendana municipalities in Gitega province.

These visits began with the Mutwenzi Valley on the Birohe hill in Gitega municipality and province to monitor and evaluate the growing season C. He noted that a river had been diverted to irrigate the vegetable crops in this valley.

On the same Birohe Hill, the Head of State Evariste Ndayishimiye visited the diversion site of a river in the Mutwenzi Valley using a makeshift dam. He asked stakeholders in the field of agriculture to support this initiative of the population by building a concrete dam to continue to irrigate on the hills.

On this occasion, the Head of State lent a hand to farmers in this Mutwenzi valley to sow carrots in beds prepared for this purpose.

The President of the Republic Evariste Ndayishimiye also visited the village association of farmers of Masare Hill in Bugendana commune in Gitega province who practice irrigation on this hill with the support of AVEDEC Asbl, with water collected from the source of a watercourse. The Head of State then visited the training and capacity building center for agro-livestock farmers built with the support of AVEDEC Asbl. The managers of this center express the wish to have permission to deliver certificates attesting to their training.

The Head of State Evariste Ndayishimiye ended his visit to his agro-pastoral complex on Bitare Hill, Bugendana commune to assess the progress of the work to prepare a land where he intends to set up a modern livestock farm.

On the sidelines of these visits to Gitega and Bugendana communes, the Head of State Evariste Ndayishimiye encouraged the initiatives of the population that responded to his call to consider cultivation season C like other seasons to increase production in order to combat poverty.

The Head of State welcomed the support and guidance provided by agricultural officials and international and non-governmental organizations to the population of the locations visited because their interventions are in line with the priorities of the Government of Burundi to eradicate hunger in order to achieve sustainable development.

He recommended that technical and financial partners involved in the field of agri-livestock to align themselves with the action plans of the administrations in their fields of intervention to avoid dispersing forces and possible overlaps. He also urged agricultural instructors to sensitize the population to irrigate during the dry season in order to take useful care of themselves, unlike the past when during the dry season, they only consumed all the production of the previous seasons.

The Head of State also called on the population to eliminate trees that consume a lot of water to avoid the drying up of waterways.
