Deforestation, a difficult challenge

Criticized by the United Nations and both national and international environmental organizations, deforestation remains the black beast of the world's future. In Burundi, the policy to combat deforestation remains unclear despite the efforts made in this direction

The overconsumption of natural resources, especially wood, induced by rapid population growth has become an equation that is difficult to solve in several states. In Burundi, progressive deforestation has remained a very worrying phenomenon in the sphere of observers and politicians for decades. According to a study carried out by Dr. Jacques Nkengurutse on the effects of deforestation and alternative solutions; demographics, bushfires have raised concerns since the beginning of the 20th century.

Currently, it seems that galloping demographics is one of the great challenges facing this small country lost in the heart of Africa. The statistics could convince any thoughtful person. While the current population of Burundi is estimated at around 11 million inhabitants, recent population projections by ISTEEBU project these figures between 18 and 22 million by 2050. This would alert the national public to the nature of forest resource management.
