2022 Apr 12Report on research activities on the impact of the extension of the MPANDA cemetery on the specific diversity of pollinating insects, dated 8 to 9 April 2022
With the aim of a research study on the “Impact of the extension of the MPANDA cemetery on the specific diversity of pollinating insects” in order to promote the conservation of this biodiversity, which is of paramount importance in the survival and functioning of ecosystems, the Burundian Office for Environmental Protection (OBPE), in partnership with the Royal Institute of Natural Sciences of Belgium (IRSNB), has entrusted the realization of this study to Prof. NDUWARSNB UGIRA Déogratias, teacher-researchers at the University of Burundi and GATOTO Christian, a Master's student in Organismal Biology and Ecology from the same institution. This research is being developed as part of GATOTO Christian's thesis.
Thus, the first pollinator insect collection trips were organized on dates from 8 to 9 April 2022 in two sectors of the Rusizi National Park (PNRzi): Palmerai Sector, where there are cemeteries, and Delta Sector of the Lake Tanganyika coastline. In all these sectors, there are 18 sites, i.e. nine sites in each sector, the next two other descents will take place after two weeks of these first ones, and so on until July.
So there will be eight runs over a period of four months. This study aims to inventory and identify pollinating insect species and their host plants in the various ecosystems of the PNRzi and the surrounding areas of the park so that we can have a list of pollinating insects present in the Palmerai sector and another in Delta.
