The city of Gitega on the verge of becoming a green city

On the occasion of Environmental Thursday, the Assistant Minister of the Environment, Agriculture and Livestock Emmanuel Ndorimana chaired on January 26, 2023, the activities of planting fruit and ornamental trees along the main arteries of the city of Gitega. It was within the framework of the “Green City” project funded by FAO.

Thirty thousand fake mango plants, thirty thousand celery palm plants and forty thousand avocado plants were produced as part of this project. The Assistant Minister for the Environment took this opportunity to call on the population of the city of Gitega to plant and protect these trees, an activity that is in the interest of citizens and of the whole nation.

At the same time, the Assistant Minister invited residents of the city of Gitega and the surrounding area to go get avocado plants from the provincial environmental, agricultural and livestock office and plant them in their households. A message quickly picked up by the municipal administration via the municipal councilor in charge of economic affairs, development and statistics Montfort Bigirimana who, in turn, called on the administration and the population of Gitega to invest more in the protection of these trees.

In addition to individuals, this project also involves some institutions that will benefit from these tree plants, including military and police camps, churches, schools and open spaces.

It should be mentioned that this activity of planting fruit and ornamental trees to make the city of Gitega a green city saw the participation of officials from the Ministry of the Environment, Agriculture and Livestock and the population of Gitega. This project, called Green City, aims to beautify the city of Gitega and increase fruit production for the benefit of the population.
