2023 Jun 01Narrative report of the Program for Research, Information Exchange, Awareness and Conservation of Biodiversity in Burundi (Exercise 2022)
During the year 2022, several activities were carried out as part of the program of research, information exchange, awareness-raising and conservation of Biodiversity in Burundi. This program was established following the partnership signed between the Burundian Office for Environmental Protection (OBPE) and the Royal Institute of Natural Sciences of Belgium (IRSNB) through the CeBIOS program. These activities include the collection of data to monitor the dynamics of habitats and biodiversity of protected areas in Burundi in order to establish a functional system for collecting data on habitat types and their evolution. Of these activities, more than 250 forms were completed and more than 150 samples were collected. Then, we strengthened the management of flora collections, in particular that of dominant plants, which, as such, serve as a reference for the recognition of habitats by producing a lexicon of plants and by encoding and labeling herbaria in the OBPE Herbarium as well as the classification of samples according to families and a check on the writings of plant species. Of these activities, more than 2000 samples have been labelled and classified in the OBPE Herbarium. Thus, the encoding and updating of the databases in Excel files were ensured.
