Improving the community resilience of indigenous peoples (Batwa) from Kibuye Hill in Mutumba commune of Karusi province in Burundi

The project to Improve the community resilience of indigenous peoples (Batwa) of Kibuye Hill in Mutumba commune aimed to promote the food and nutrition security of 46 households in the Batwa community.The observation that the Association Protection of Natural Resources for the Welfare of the Population in Burundi (APRN/BEPB) found with this community was that most Batwa eat only once a day, and in insufficient quantity and quality antlers. The successful achievement of the objective of the project will therefore be marked by the better access of Batwa households to various food products so that each member of the household eats at least twice a day.The main activities carried out in the framework of this project are:

  1. Development of 46 vegetable gardens in 46 households of indigenous peoples;
  2. Development of 4 nurseries, one for cabbages, one for onions, one for eggplants and another for amaranths;
  3. Distribution of quality seeds, adapted to new climatic conditions, in particular amaranths, eggplants, cabbages and onions, to all 46 Batwa households as well as agricultural equipment (hoes, watering cans) necessary for maintaining vegetable gardens.
