2024 May 06The European Union is mobilising to support the victims of floods and landslides in Burundi
Following the heavy rains linked to the El Niño phenomenon and the rise in the level of Lake Tanganyika, which led to severe floods in Burundi, the European Union, in collaboration with the Burundian authorities, provided humanitarian aid of EUR 200,000 (620 million BIF) to assist the most affected families. The floods have also damaged public infrastructure, as well as agricultural land. This EU funding allows the Burundian Red Cross to provide emergency aid to families whose homes have been destroyed and to displaced persons. Affected families include internally displaced persons and returnees. As the lake's waters continue to rise, the number of families in difficulty continues to increase. This support is therefore essential to support more than 3,600 people directly affected by the floods in the provinces of Cibitoke, Bujumbura Mairie, Bujumbura Rural, Rumonge and Makamba.
