2024 Aug 29Feeding Clarias gariepinus from Lake Albert and Laguna Nana in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Summary
The study examined the diet of Clarias gariepinus in Lake Albert and Nana Lagoon over six months, from January to June 2021, taking into account the dry and rainy seasons and analyzing 199 specimens. The fish in the lake were generally heavier and longer than those in the lagoon, except in May. This difference could be due to the variety of fishing methods. The results show that insects were more present in the lagoon, while fish, digestible materials and plants predominated in the lake. Crustaceans and worms were negatively linked to the lagoon. Clarias gariepinus is an opportunistic omnivore whose diet varies with size: juveniles consume insects and plankton, while adults prey on small fish. This dietary flexibility promotes its rapid growth and success in a variety of environments.
