Quantification of Cryptosporidium spp.

Summary

It is through the development and health of the biofilm that the purification efficiency is more or less high. When Cryptosporidiums are under frequent stress, they group together and form what is called a biofilm. Natural biofilms have a very complicated network. Cryptosporidium biofilms are responsible for several chronic diseases. The research focuses on the details of the distribution, morphology, and composition of biofilms in wastewater treatment systems. It is in this perspective that the present work aims at the quantification of biofilms in relation to physicochemical variables. Biofilm is defined as a community of microorganisms irreversibly associated with a surface and enclosed in a matrix of extracellular polymer substance. For this study, samples were taken from the wastewater treatment plant in La Cité Verte using appropriate techniques. During the study, MES and color had practically the same variation profile. The values have gradually declined as the purification progresses. The occurrences of biofilms are significantly and positively correlated with MES and color because we found that the occurrences of Cryptosporidium spp. biofilms were higher at the beginning of the treatment in the first basins. Parasitic organisms are generally linked to organic matter suspended in water. This bond is caused by electrostatic interactions, those of Lifshitz-Van der Waals and acids-bases of Lewis. In conclusion, this study shows that biofilms not only serve as an environmental reservoir for oocysts, but are also capable of promoting the multiplication of Cryptosporidium in aquatic environments. The presence of biofilms in wastewater treatment plants is rather an advantage because they contain a multitude of purifying biomass useful for water purification. The model represents biogrowth in the presence of nutrients, its effect on mass transfer, and its interaction with hydrodynamics in wastewater treatment plants. It also provides a tool for the assessment of conditions leading to increased resistance to permeability in relation to channel congestion. Read the full article here
