Mount Musumba plagued by deforestation

The inhabitants of Mirama Hill in the town of Kanyosha in Bujumbura province, in collaboration with the NGO Learn Nature and Grow Nature, planted trees on Mount Musumba on Saturday, January 11, 2025. According to Pierre Claver Rutomera, legal representative of this organization, 18,000 plants were transplanted there. He points out that this organization intends to extend the reforestation campaign to other provinces in the country. In the long term, this organization aims to combat the phenomenon of deforestation that is observed and to control the erosion that results from it, he says.

Environmentalists reveal that Burundi is losing land due to erosion estimated at more than 100 tons per hectare each year. In the East, these losses are estimated at 4 tons per hectare per year, in the Center 8 tons/ha/year and 100 tons/ha/ year in the western provinces of the country. “The higher the rainfall, the more considerable the land losses are considerable, especially in the Mirwa if nothing is done”, they warn.
