It is in this context that the student NKUNZIMANA Faustin from the Faculty of Sciences, Department of Biology completed an internship whose theme is entitled: “Enumeration and identification of flies preserved in the OBPE biodiversity research laboratory”.

The study consisted of a taxonomic identification of flies kept in the OBPE laboratory located in Jabe within the Biodiversity Research Department. The internship lasted a period of one month from January 2 to February 2, 2020. The supervision of the student was provided by Dr. Déogratias NDUWARUGIRA, Professor at the University of Burundi and Msc Longin NDAYIKEZA, researcher at the OBPE.

The internship took place in three stages. The first step consisted in checking the entomological boxes or jars that did or did not have a label indicating the date, the medium of collection, the location, the method of collection and the name of the collector. Thus, a separation of the samples according to this information was carried out. Separation of specimens according to location and method of collection

The second step consisted in the determination of the specimens that had already been separated. This determination was made in two sub-steps, in particular the separation of the specimens by morphoesis (size, color). The second sub-step was to separate the families under binocular and using the determination keys (Connal et al, 2010 and Steffen and Marshall, 2006). Collections made and preserved at the OBPE also served as a reference.

The third and final stage, which took place after February 2, consisted of analyzing the data and writing the internship report.
