The present research was carried out in the Rwegura sector, one of the four sectors that make up the Kibira National Park. Nine sites, all built along the same transect that was already in place to monitor chimpanzees, were the subject of the study. These sites extend over a distance of about 5 km and were chosen according to their particular plant formations and the levels of different evolutionary stages.
The present study was conducted by:
MANIRAKIZA Marc
Under the supervision of:
- Mr. Benoît NZIGIDAHERA, Biodiversity Research Manager at the National Institute for Environment and Nature Conservation (INECN)
- Prof. Bernadette HABONIMANA, Professor at the University of Burundi, Faculty of Agronomy and Bio-Engineering (FABI), Department of Environmental Management and Ecology.

Physiognomy was approached from two perspectives: the strata and the overlap. Through careful observation in the field, the recovery was estimated and attributed to each stratum. The inventory of biological types and the calculation of their spectrum provided information necessary for the description of the structure and physiognomy of vegetation taken individually. The weighted spectrum was also calculated based on the weighting coefficients corresponding to the dominance abundance coefficients according to the Lewalle scale.
The overall objective of the present work was to establish areas for monitoring the dynamics of habitats, populations and species in the PNK (Rwegura sector) and to establish the basic scientific data necessary for the start of surveillance activities. The information provided by this work was of great importance.
