2020 Feb 24Project: Support for food security in vulnerable households in the Bibara, Rabiro, Mubaragaza and Nkubara hills
In the commune of Mutumba, the rural population paid a heavy price following the vagaries of climate change during the A and B growing seasons. Climate disturbances were characterized either by a long period of drought or by torrential rains or hail, which caused the loss of several hundred hectares of crops in January 2017. This situation has resulted in a shortage of planting material for a population that lacks the means to obtain seeds for crops that contribute inescapably to food security.
The project was financed by All We Can through its emergency aid program. It targeted 720 households grouped into 24 cooperatives. He provided planting material consisting of 780,000 sweet potato cuttings of the “Mugande” variety and seeds of vegetable crops consisting mainly of cabbages, amaranths, tomatoes and eggplants. The distribution of the seeds was enhanced by the presence of Madame the Governor of Karusi province and the Director of Agriculture and Livestock (DPAE) in the province of Karusi.
The beneficiaries were also supervised on best agricultural practices at the marsh level under the supervision of the Head of the APRN/BEPB Research and Application Center in the commune of Mutumba.
