Strengthening the herbarium service of the Burundian Office for Environmental Protection

The Herbarium of the Burundian Office for Environmental Protection (OBPE) is one of the reference Herbaria in Burundi alongside that of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Burundi. It contains many plant species from forest ecosystems, agroecosystems and other biotopes of Burundi. Based on this herbarium, a vernacular lexicon of the flora of Burundi and a guide for monitoring the dynamics of the habitats of the Ruvubu National Park were developed. To strengthen the service offered by this Herbarium for student interns, researchers and the scientific world in general, the OBPE under the funding of the Royal Institute of Natural Sciences of Belgium (IRSCnb) through the “Program of Research, Information Exchange, Information Exchange, Awareness and Conservation of Biodiversity in Burundi” recruited two resource persons to work within this Herbarium. These people are NDUWARUGIRA Oscar and NIMENYA Innocent. These resource persons, under the coordination of the Head of Biodiversity Research at the OPBE, carried out the following activities:

  • Encoding and labelling of herbariums;
  • Participation in activities to monitor the dynamics of habitats to collect, identify the species collected and support for their encoding to make seagrass beds;
  • Participation in the determination of specimens not determined up to the species during studies carried out on the dynamics of habitats in Kibira National Park;
  • Participation in the development and publication of
