Study of the distribution and exploitation of Sinarundinaria alpina

Habitat in Sinarundinaria alpina The present research is being carried out in Kibira National Park and this ecosystem is chosen because of its richness in bamboos. This biological resource is classified among the species most threatened with extinction in Burundi mainly due to its uncontrolled exploitation. This takes place while bamboo plays an important role in the lives of local populations and especially the Batwa.

Bamboo is used in the manufacture of various objects such as baskets, stretchers, furniture such as beds, armchairs, tables, mulch, stakes etc. Bamboo is a biological resource to be valued and whose stock must be known in order to develop an operating plan for sustainable exploitation.

Various uses of bamboo around Kibira National Park

Thus, the present study aims to:

- Knowledge of the stock, distribution and status of this resource;
- Diagnosis of the market and different uses of bamboo;
- Drawing up an exploitation plan for the sustainable and rational use of the resource.

To achieve the expected results, the following steps are taken:

Regarding the inventory and characterization of bamboo stands, it is a question of identifying bamboo groves that exceed 400 m² in area.

Taking dendrometric measurements The basal area of bamboos exceeding 5 cm in diameter is determined on an area of 25 m by 25 m for standing bamboos and for the stumps of cut bamboos. Dominant species are harvested stratum by stratum in each stand for characterization. The slope on which the bamboo grove is located and the type of soil. Using GPS, the geographic coordinates of the points located along the entire perimeter of the bamboo grove are recorded for mapping. Sample collection
