Systematic and ecological study of pollinators in ecosystems in the Imbo Centre plain, the Congo-Nile Ridge and the Bugesera depression

The present study is a contribution to the improvement of knowledge on pollinators in natural ecosystems and agro-ecosystems in Burundi. It was carried out in the ecosystems of the Imbo Centre plain, the Congo-Nile Ridge and the Bugesera depression by:

GIRUKWISHAKA Schadrack

Under the supervision of:

- Mr. Benoît NZIGIDAHERA, Biodiversity Research Manager at the National Institute for Environment and Nature Conservation (INECN)

- Prof. Anastasie GASOGO, Professor at the University of Burundi, Faculty of Sciences, Department of Biology.

Pollinator identification

The collection of pollinators in the various ecosystems used several trapping methods. These include the entomological net, alcohol sickness trap and jars filled with detergent water. In the case of the Malaise trap, 2 traps were always used in parallel and without interruption, one in an agricultural environment, the other in the nearest artificial afforestation or fallow land to finally highlight the types of interrelationships that may exist between these different environments.

Taxonomic identification of specimens required the use of binocular magnifiers and documents containing information on the taxonomy and ecology of pollinators. Both national and international scientists were involved in the completion of this work.
