Workshop to validate the study on the establishment of indicators for monitoring biodiversity trends in Burundi

Opening of the workshopThe opening remarks for the activities of this workshop were delivered by the Director of Forests who represented the Director General of OBPE who was unable to attend. After the welcome speech, he invited participants to contribute actively to the analysis of the document so that it would be a solid document that reflects the reality that exists in the country.

PresentationThen, there was a presentation by Professor HABONIMANA Bernadette on the study of trends in biodiversity, species and ecosystems providing ecosystem services. She first emphasized that this study was conducted in the context of implementing the National Strategy and Action Plan on Biodiversity in Burundi (SNPAB) based on the fact that the national objectives 5, 7,13 corresponding to the Aichi objective 5 and the national objective 15 corresponding to the Aichi objective 15 and the national objective 15 corresponding to the Aichi objective 14 are not all based on known quantitative data and do not start from a very specific starting situation.

Continuing, she gave an overview of ecosystems and presented the methodology used, which consisted of analyzing trends in the extent of natural ecosystems. Regarding the methodology, the resource persons collected and digitized all existing maps (ancient and current) on these ecosystems: vegetation maps of Burundi, maps of protected areas. These people also collected numerical data on the areas of ecosystem areas through scientific studies, management plans, decrees delimiting protected areas and other reliable documents available, the exploitation of existing satellite data on the situation of vegetation in Burundi, the putting of data (cartographic and numerical) in a temporary sequence, the analysis of the information available through the projects already carried out and those in progress or planned (FAO, UNDP, IFAD, Bank Global, etc.) and the exploitation of existing satellite data on the situation of agroecosystems in Burundi.

In addition, the results on trends in the extent of ecosystems and natural habitats where she mentioned the evolution of vegetation, the current situation of habitats, current situation of species in protected areas, trends in swamps in Burundi while showing the evolution of marshes by referring to the situation of swamps in 1999 established by Tarek, trends in populations and the risk of extinction of species providing ecosystem services: Eremospatha and cyperotha Latifolius have been also highlighted.

This presentation was followed by another presentation on indicators for measuring, monitoring and reporting the trend of ecosystems, habitats and species in Burundi made by Msc. NZIGIDAHERA Benoît head of biodiversity research at OBPE.

The available map data is stored either in the form of shapefiles or in the form of geographic coordinates. Other data is recorded in the form of graphs or in the form of hierarchical lists.

AttendeesAttendeesAfter these presentations, participants began an analysis session on the study document on trends in biodiversity, species and ecosystems that provide ecosystem services in order to provide advice and considerations relating to them.

After this session of enrichment and formulation of recommendations, the document on the study of trends in biodiversity, species and ecosystems providing ecosystem services: Formulation of indicators to measure, monitor and report the trend of biodiversity in Burundi was validated with some additions and corrections. The workshop was closed by the Director General of OBPE at 13:00 local time.
