Rattan is a non-wood forest product for artisanal use. In Burundi, the only species that exists is “Eremospatha haullevilleana” found in particular in the Kigwena forest and on farms bordering the latter. This species, known as “Urugage”, had long been exploited by the Burundian population. It is a raw material used in the manufacture of many handicrafts sold in town and in the countryside. Although this resource is not on the IUCN red list of endangered species, in Burundi, the uncontrolled collection of the latter for various purposes causes its disappearance in its natural environment.
