Burundi National Forest Policy (2012-2025)

The approach based on broad stakeholder participation was preferred. Faced with uncontrolled forest exploitation; repeated bush fires; land clearing for agricultural purposes; overgrazing; overexploitation of forest resources; and the introduction of uncontrolled forest species and the impoverishment of forest genetic heritage, Burundi adopted a National Forest Policy in 2012. This document National Forest Policy of Burundi (2012-2025), structured around 3 parts (Diagnosis of the forest sector; the elements of forest policy and the links with other existing policies; and (iii) the implementation of the policy;, includes 7 chapters. The general objective of this document is to perpetuate existing forest resources and the development of new resources to ensure the socio-economic and ecological needs of present and future populations. Specifically, it aims to plan the development of the forest sector in order to meet the needs of populations and the Country while maintaining the resource; develop and rationally manage forest resources (increase the forest cover rate to 20% in 2025); and valorize forest resources; strengthen human and institutional capacities. The national forest policy and its implementation are divided into areas of intervention and actions identified, objective by objective
