2008 Oct 01Current and future types of governance and categories of protected areas in Burundi
In 2008, Burundi had 14 protected areas divided into 4 IUCN categories, namely National Parks, Nature Reserves, Natural Monuments and Protected Landscapes. In a participatory approach, it is becoming essential to seek to involve more local populations and other protected area stakeholders in the identification, management and monitoring of protected areas in order to ensure their effectiveness and effectiveness for the conservation of biodiversity. The strategic axes that can help achieve this vision are the following five:
- Broadening the range of governance methods and categories of protected areas;
- Stakeholder participation and engagement;
- Establishment of development programs around protected areas;
- Synergy in the management of protected areas;
- Improvement of the financing mechanism for protected areas.
In broadening the range of governance methods and categories of protected areas, Burundi would like to have a greater range of governance over a large number of protected areas likely to contain all the national biodiversity. This study presents the different forms of governance of protected areas in Burundi as well as their different categories.
