2016 May 01Decision-makers have a duty to understand the importance of genetic resources and to promote the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from their use
In Burundi, few genetic resources have been identified and studied. In particular, we will mention Osyris lanceolata (Umuvyi), a shrub that is internationally recognized and sought after by cosmetic industries; Prunus africana (Umuremera), a large tree that is highly sought after by pharmaceutical industries. For these two genetic resources, studies have shown that, once exploited rationally, they
can contribute to the national economy and to the well-being of populations.
Burundi still has a great need to control information on the existence of all genetic resources. The importance of traditional knowledge associated with genetic resources remains poorly documented.
