2023 Apr 01Distribution and status of the invasive liana Sericostachys scandens GILG & LOPR.
Globally, invasive species are recognized as being the second cause of biodiversity loss after the destruction of habitats and their problem is now the subject of growing conservation interest. The objectives of this study are to assess the state of knowledge of the invasive species Sericostachys scandens, to study the distribution of the species Sericostachys scandens on Burundian territory and to assess the status of the species Sericostachys scandens in the regions of occurrence of the species in general and in the regions of occurrence of the species in general and in the Kibira National Park and in the Bururi Forest Nature Reserve in particular. The present study is a contribution to the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (SNPAB) in its objective 10. The methodology used to achieve these goals consisted of surveys among researchers, managers and professors at the University. Quadrants have been established at the level of Kibira National Park and the Bururi Forest Nature Reserve. The results revealed the presence of Sericostachys scandens in Congo Nile Ridge and in almost all protected areas in this region. As for the status, worrying levels of proliferation have been observed by this species, thus threatening the biodiversity of the Protected Areas, which shelter it. With high density values for the Sericostachys scandens species, of up to 475 individuals per ha at the Bururi Forest Nature Reserve and those of up to 185 individuals per ha in Kibira National Park, it is more than essential and urgent to develop methods to manage it actively in order to control or eradicate it as stipulated by the CBD through its Aichi Targets 9.
