2023 Aug 01Diversity and ecology of pollinating Syrphidae in Kibira National Park: case of the Teza sector and its surrounding ecosystems
As part of the Master's thesis, a research internship was carried out at OBPE by a student from the University of Burundi from 1 to 31 August 2023. The activities carried out concerned the identification of Syrphidae species collected in the Kibira National Park. The aim of the study was to identify and inventory the Syrphidae present in the study area in order to assess the effect of habitat disturbance on the abundance and diversity of Syrphidae in this area. The study resulted in the identification of 63 species of Syrphidae belonging to 19 genera, several of which were remarkable in both forest and non-forest habitats. The abundance structure is very unbalanced, with a few very abundant species and a lot of rare species. It was found that the hoverfly fauna in the non-forest environment differs from that of the forest environment and that the latter hosts a great diversity of them.
