2014 Feb 01Ecosystem services for the survival of the population and the growth of the national economy
In Burundi as everywhere else, ecological processes are essential for food production, good health and other aspects of life and sustainable development. They also provide a wide range of biological resources that humans use to meet their diverse needs. Ecosystems are therefore systems that support life.
Despite the multiple services provided by ecosystems, the fact is that they disappear day by day without Burundians, even the most educated, realizing it. The biological resources that man constantly needs are gradually decreasing, the land is constantly losing its fertility, hunger is clearly gaining ground. Despite this, man does not fail to perform actions that degrade natural resources. Several negative incentives are constantly being introduced into people's lifestyles. As a result, biodiversity is degraded through the loss of ecosystems, species, genes and associated goods and services. These attitudes are mainly linked to the lack of information on ecosystem services.
In an effort to correct trends, a study was conducted to visualize the monetary losses that Burundians suffer by taking left-handed actions against natural ecosystems. This study also aims to raise awareness among decision-makers, major entrepreneurs and the general public so that they change their attitudes and take a voice towards the protection of biodiversity.
