Field trip report on research on ecological beekeeping with indigenous species (meliponuculture) in Ruvubu National Park, February 2020

The month of February 2020 was characterized by the monitoring of activities related to the manufacture of melipones' shelters (apiaries), the manufacture of hives and the settlement of hives by melipones. Two apiaries containing 20 hives have been set up in Gasave. To avoid the problems encountered in the Muremera apiaries, the height of the apiaries was reduced from 3m to 2m to avoid the harmful effects associated with bad weather. In addition, ants were the main cause of the disappearance of Melipones in Muremera. It was decided to install a system that prevents these ants from reaching the hives by suspending the hives and by placing a container of water between the hives and their attachment points to block these ants. Finally, the managers of the Park will have to ensure the permanent maintenance of the sites of these apiaries because the poor sanitation of an apiary is the gateway for bee enemies. The dimensions of the hives have also been revised downwards (50cmx40cmx37cm) respectively the length, the width and the height. Because it was found that large hives require bees a lot of work to protect them with wax and fill them with honeycombs. The hives were made with very dry and well-welded planks to avoid contact between the inside and the outside of the hive. We recommend that the Park manager plant flowering plants near the apiaries to promote the stability of the melipones in these places. In addition, surveillance and sanitation of apiaries are recommended to avoid hives being stolen and attacked by animal pests.
