Burundi has placed among its priorities the search for solutions to environmental issues that concern other nations of the world. For example, it is a Party to most of the international conventions relating to climate change, in particular the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which it ratified on 6 April 1997.

Shortly after this ratification, Burundi was able to benefit from the Global Environment Fund, funding that allowed the production of this First National Communication under this last Convention. This document therefore reports on the greenhouse gas emissions situation in Burundi.
