Forest Plantations and Wooded Islands in Burundi: Year 2011

Forest plantations and wooded islands are an integral part of Burundi's landscape. Since most of the natural vegetation has been cleared and the rest is protected, the majority of forest products used by the people of Burundi come from forest plantations, wooded islands and agroforestry systems. These wood resources are therefore of vital importance for the livelihood of the populations of Burundi even if their contribution to economic growth (or to the Gross Domestic Product) remains underestimated (around 2%). This is in part due to the fact that most forest products are often consumed directly and never reach the market. This report is a comprehensive study aimed at characterizing and synthesizing information on the current status, challenges, opportunities and options for the future management of forest plantations in Burundi.

This study assesses the situation in 2011 of forest plantations/wooded islands in the country in relation to their distribution and location, the species planted there and the sources of plants and seeds, their distribution by age, their management as well as the quality of the stands and other characteristics.
